Kawakawa Stone
Welcome to the world of Nick Spicer Balme and Madelyne Gourdin, globally renowned Pounamu carvers.
Growing up in New Zealand, Nick was drawn to carving as a counterbalance to life in the modern world. Mady discovered her love for Pounamu carving, and then met Nick. Together they created Kawakawa Stone Limited. Since then, they have travelled the world, creating work and hunting for different Jade sources. Through these travels, they have discovered different jade cultures and arts, which has influenced her work and grown her practice. Every trip has been “eye-opening” into endless sources of inspiration, ideas, and techniques.

Tuhuru Taonga
George from Tuhuru Taonga was born and raised in a small Māori settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand called Arahura Pā. It was here his fascination and love for pounamu began.
Working only with pounamu he combines modern contemporary styles with time-honoured designs. George’s mission is to help elevate the arts amongst his hapū (subtribe or clan) and to provide a platform for his whānau (extended family) to promote and sell their work.
You can browse the authentic range of handmade carvings and purchase directly or commission a custom made piece.
All of his art is made using genuine New Zealand pounamu that he sources by himself and with other kaitiaki pounamu (guardians) on Te Tai o Poutini (New Zealand’s West Coast). George and the other kaitiaki pounamu believe it is important that when someone is buying taonga pounamu, they get the genuine real deal.
They feel it is wrong that the majority of Jade carvings sold in New Zealand are made from British Columbian Jade carved in China using Māori designs. It is their goal, therefore, to educate and encourage people to buy Māori made taonga (treasure).George also has information on his website about the different types of Pounamu, and the related Mythology and Legends.
