The Woolshed Gallery (Chillwind Clothing) started in Akaroa in 1995 selling sheepskin footwear made in New Zealand (NZ). Today the business also operates in Hanmer, Hokitika and Kaikoura and has a second shop in Akaroa called Woolworx, and a second shop in Hokitika called Millies Merinos.
They stock NZ made products and product made from NZ raw materials. They specialise in clothing made from Merino sheep wool (the finest sheep wool in the world) and Possum fur. The Brush Tail Possum comes from Australia with NZ being the only other country to have them in the wild. They are protected in Australia, but in NZ they require control to protect our native forest and birds.
Items include clothing (under garments to outer garments) made from Merino wool, Possum fur and leather. They also have slippers, shoes, boots, scarves, hats, gloves, blankets, duvets, and accessories.
My name is Aaron Ellis-Smith. I was born in New Zealand and live in Mangawhai, a coastal town on the east coast of the north island, 1 hour south of Whangarei.
I began carving in 2004 and have always loved timber. I carve most types of wood (and occasionally other mediums), but find swamp kauri the most enjoyable timber to sculpt. Something about it’s character, age (this can range from 2000 to 50,000 years old), feeling and uniqueness to New Zealand inspires me. I also enjoy New Zealand’s native forest, and perhaps part of the reason I love swamp kauri is, although it is a finite resource, it doesn’t require damage to, or the felling of our wonderful native forest.
Carving is something I enjoy doing, being a part of a pieces evolution into final form is something I never get tired of. I hope that those who see my work gain as much pleasure from the pieces, as I received creating them.
I’d like to introduce my new business manufacturing Concrete Sleepers. They are a fantastic product that stands the test of time with no rotting, no requirement to paint and they don’t fade. You can also choose from a wide range of colours to suit your garden or landscaping theme. They’re easy to install and also act as a sound barrier. I’m currently custom manufacturing so the lead time is around 4-6 weeks – and I can freight them anywhere in NZ.
